It's amazing what can inspire you to do something. Two days before the creation of this blog, I went for a hike with some young people, who appeared to be a bit apprehensive to do it alone, and I'm sure they are quite justified in their apprehension. Over the years, I've notice, more and more people are becoming territorial, they don't like people walking near their homes. I respect their property, their homesite lease boundaries however this doesn't stop them from issuing threats or starting some conflict.
That day I was hiking, I was talking to all the young people how certain homes weren't there, how things looked long time ago. I started talking about Kayenta and how things looked. They were intrigued, sharing stories of my youth, I guess they realized as a young person I was just like them. They laughed as I told about the mischief I got into as a young child and stories of me being a teenager.
The sun had set, and we were stumbling through the bushes, and sand hills, tripping over the uneven terrain. It didn't help that the town lights were shining in our direction, making like we were staring into the head lights of car at night.
After we entered town, we came across some old cars, we started looking at them, I started taking pictures. When I did a complete circle of an old Chrysler car buried up to it's wheels in sand, I came across a decal on the car's trunk door. It read, "Used Car Sales - Kayenta Car Sales - Kayenta, Arizona." The ladies of the group walked away, while the guys were curious as to what caught my attention. I showed them the decal, and in amazement, they didn't know Kayenta had a Used Car dealer. They listened intently as I explained where it was located, and what it looked like. We spent an hour by the car talking about the history of Kayenta. They were intrigued.
On teen said, "Wow, my grandparents or parents never told anything like this."
It was then, when I asked myself, "I wonder how young people don't know anything about Kayenta's past, How many would be interested?" Inspired by this I decided to create a blog of Kayenta's Past. I wanted to post pictures for young people who may never have the opportunity to learn about Kayenta's past.
