VOLLEYBALL MATCH AT KAYENTA COMMUNITY SCHOOL

I was invited to this Volleyball Game between Kayenta Community School Eagles (Hosting at the KCS Old Gym) and Mexican Hat Elementary School Falcons, by a Church Member and Family Friend in October 2003. You can barely see my family friends daughter looking toward the camera. She's sitting on the bleachers, third person to the left of the coach. I thought this was a great picture of old gym and students playing volleyball in it after school.

Currently, Kayenta Community School has an entirely new school building or compound set up behind the Old Kayenta Boarding School. I'm not sure of the outcome of this building, but I haven't seen any more games being played in this old gym. I just wanted to share with you what the old gym looked like.

PINON MERCANTILE CO.

In August 2002, I had a relative who worked at Pinon Boarding School and went up to visit him. After we handled business, I decided to drive around Pinon to see the Old Store. There some small changes in the place, this place was selling NAPA auto parts, Cell Phones, Grocery, Navajo Arts and Craft. I went in there to get a soda and bag of chips.

In December 2011, we were Christmas Caroling at Forest Lake Chapter House, so after we were finished setting up, we had 2 and 1/2 hours of free time, so I asked my group if they ever been to to Pinon and all of them said never. They were curious and wanted to see what Pinon was about, we drove by and the sun had gone down, and I saw that this store had been burned and it was completely fenced off. I don't if they are going to do a complete clean up, rebuild. I'll try to look into it.

BECLABITO GAS STATION

I posted this picture I took of Beclabito Gas Station especially since this store has been renovated. Today this gas station has 8 pumps, and the front and inside has been re-done. In this picture you see a vestibule housing the door way, and you see a single pump station and the road leading up to the store is dirt. Today this entire store front is paved. I completely forgot this is what it use to look like.

This picture was taken September 2002.

KAYENTA TRADING POST

Tear, how I miss you Kayenta Trading Post. This picture is dated August 2002. I can not believe this picture was taken in 2002, it seemed like it was just a little while ago. This Trading Post was like family, seriously, every time I returned to Kayenta I would stop in for a visit, walk up and down those aisles taking in the sights and sounds of HOME. It always felt like home to go there. I was loyal to this store, and this story had 80% of things I wanted when I needed to go to the store, and the remaining 20% would take me to all the other stores in town.

This store was here when I was kid, I remember when the parking lot was sand. I remember how Amazed I was when the paved the parking lot. I remember going to this trading post in the late 70's seeing sheep wool, food, clothes for sell in this store. At that time was managed by the Blair's , we use to call it Blair's. "Mom I'm going to Blair's!" Hahaha! I use to buy my shoes from this store and my pants. Wow those were the days.

This store changed owners a couple time in the late 80's and early nineties. But over all the store was pretty much the same. You could come here and rent moves, at one time get something at the deli, you could wire money, make your phone calls from the pay phone. Check out the latest High Tech gadgets at Radio Shack. This store was the best. Oh Kayenta Trading Post I miss you. If Kayenta Trading Post were to open I would drive to it despite the fact that Bashas' is closer to my house. They just had better customer service.
I miss this store, I grew up with it, and now it's gone. :(

TSEGI TRADING POST/ GAS STATION/DINER

Once located on Marsh Pass (Historically a very difficult pass to travel through for early travelers and migrants), the Tsegi Trading sat on a sandstone rock cliff that overlooked the mouth of Tsegi Canyon. As a young child in the 70's I remember stopping at this place for gas with my parents. I use to like stopping here to play billiards with my father. I wasn't any good, but it sure was fun thinking I was. When we finished play a game of billiards we would find our meal waiting for us. Awesome Memory! I too this picture in July of 2002, as you can see it have been vandalized and tagged with all kinds of graffiti.
In October of 2003, I received a call from one of my family members who informed that an arsonist burned down this old building. I immediately got ready and drove out to see it for myself. I walked around an I could see other people stopping by to see the what was left. The other people were quiet, it was like a funeral service, and they were paying their respects. I tried my best not to disturb them, and work hard to keep them out of my pictures.
A few minutes after to took several pictures, I noticed a man and a woman show up, they stood in front of the building looking at it for the longest time and remained there even after I left. It's so said to see an old building like this destroyed. Today the only thing that remains in this location is rubble.

BABY ROCK TRADING POST

I took these pictures March 2002. I really enjoyed my digital camera, it was revolutionary, before all the pictures I took had to be sent away, developed, returned and picked up. A process that took two weeks especially here in Kayenta. So it was fun and quick for me to take pictures and view my shots. So I went out and took these pictures of Baby Rocks Trading Post. I just had a feeling they were going to tear down this building anytime. Sure enough they tore the building down with the last two years. It's so sad to see this go.
When I was a little kid, I remember going to this Trading Post with my mother, and of course the first place I went to were the toys. Many times I didn't get anything, but it sure was nice to browse and wish I could have those toys.
As far as what else was in this store, my mind deceives and fails to recall what else they sold in this place. I could be wrong but It was like a typical trading post selling blankets, rugs, jewelry, some grocery, and clothes. Like I said I only wanted to go to this store because of the toys. Hahaha! As you can see this was a nice looking store, gorgeous structure, and handsome design. It sure would have been nice to see this building still operational and functioning as a store.

I think it was 2010 or 2011, when I witnessed the Navajo Nation tearing down this building and loading everything into steel containers as I drove past. Really sad to see it gone. There was also a two story about 30 yards east of this building and another 100 yards there was an Old building of a gas station and car garage. All three buildings have been torn down. Sad to see changes like this.

PREPARING SONIC BUSINESS SITE AND ROAD

This picture was take November 2002. The heavy equipment are lined after a day of work preparing the SONIC DRIVE-IN Business Site and the Road from the Teehindeeh Estates to U.S. Highway 160. When I took this picture I wasn't quite sure what they were going to build, I had my fingers crossed for KFC, I love them hotwings. Hahahaa!
